Main Outcome:

Retelling - alternative perspective

Length:

15 sessions, 3 weeks

Overview and Outcomes:

The three-week Writing Root is based on the story ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’ by Neil Gaiman. It includes exemplified grammar activities throughout, as well as including drama techniques such as thought-tapping. Visual images are also incorporated. Specific teaching strategies are highlighted in bold and there is a glossary to explain how each of these work in a classroom situation.

Synopsis of Text:

Odd, a young Viking boy, is left fatherless following a raid and in his icy, ancient world there is no mercy for an unlucky soul with a crushed foot and no one to protect him. Fleeing to the woods, Odd stumbles upon and releases a trapped bear and then Odd's destiny begins to change. The eagle, bear and fox Odd encounters are Norse gods, trapped in animal form by the evil frost giants who have conquered Asgard, the city of the gods. Now our hero must reclaim Thor's hammer, outwit the frost giants and release the gods.

Text Rationale:

This book, written and illustrated by award-winning duo Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell, draws on Norse mythology and the Vikings for inspiration. With a thrilling wintry setting and cast of magical characters, the adventure story will generate high levels of engagement.  The plot, featuring Norse gods Thor, Odin and Loki, is rich and multi-layered so will help develop stamina for reading.  Beautiful illustrations complement the story and will generate many questions for classroom discussion.
