Overview and Outcomes:

This is a 15-session Literary Leaf for Africa, Amazing Africa by Atinuke and covers all areas of the KS1 and Lower KS2 content domains. The layout, vocabulary, content and illustrations will capture children's attention and provide plenty of opportunities for modelling key reading skills.  Children will develop their fact-finding skills, as well as summarising, matching, sequencing, asking questions, and not forgetting simply reading for pleasure from this wonderful text.

Synopsis of Text:

We chose this book for a Literary Leaf as we simply couldn't put it down after reviewing it one month! Every page is a visible feast, exploding in features, diagrams and maps and we knew this was the type of non-fiction we needed to use in a Literary Leaf.

This beautifully-written text captures Africa's unique mix of the modern and the traditional, as the author explores its geography, its peoples, its animals, its history, its resources and its cultural diversity. The book divides Africa into five sections: South, East, West, Central and North, each with its own introduction. This is followed by a page per country, containing a delightful mix of friendly, informative text and colourful illustrations. The richest king, the tallest sand dunes and the biggest waterfall on the planet are all here, alongside drummers, cocoa growers, inventors, balancing stones, salt lakes, high-tech cities and nomads who use GPS! This is non-fiction at its most exciting, exhilarating and energetic, illustrated with passion and commitment by Mouni Feddag.
