KS: Upper KS2

Year Group: Year 6

Literary Theme: Crossing Borders

Author(s): Levison Wood

Overview and Outcomes:

This is a 15-session Literary Leaf for Incredible Journeys by Levison Wood. The Literary Leaf covers all aspects of the KS2 content domain and takes children through the book, unpicking vocabulary and getting them to imagine themselves as an explorer to immerse themslves in the choices made by real people.

Synopsis of Text:

We chose this book for a Literary Leaf as we loved that it had been written by an actual expert in the field of exploring!  We think this is a really exciting book with facts and visuals that will astound younger and older readers alike.

This beautiful book allows us to walk alongside real-life explorer Levison Wood to travel around the world, meeting some of history's most daring pioneers, and be inspired to go on our very own adventures!

Each double page spread details one of the most epic expeditions ever undertaken, from ancient times to the present day.  On a journey through history we venture into journeys along the Silk Road and medieval pilgrimages to the Holy Land, to Captain Cook’s voyages of discovery and Amelia Earhart’s daring feats of bravery, as well as learning about recent missions to the Moon and the Mariana Trench. Beautifully illustrated with maps showing the routes, each page is filled with detail bringing the cultures of each region to life.  Along the way, Levison Wood shares his own insights into adventuring, telling you what it's REALLY like to follow in the footsteps of Alexander the Great!

This would beautifully complement The Explorer by Katherine Rundell which we also have a Literary Leaf for but it would also support children's understanding of the journeys people undertake around the world as well as sit well under the the  'Enterprise and Activism' theme we have in the Literary Curriculum for Spring 1 in Year 6.
