A Literary Leaf for Real-life Mysteries: Can you explain the unexplained?

KS: Upper KS2

Year Group: Year 5

Literary Theme: Mystery & Truth

Author(s): Susan Martineau

Overview and Outcomes:

This is a 15-session Literary Leaf for Real-Life Mysteries by Susan Martineau and Vicky Barker. This Literary Leaf covers all aspects of the Key Stage 2 content domain and offers many rich opportunities for children to develop their vocabulary as well as their debating skills. The Literary Leaf begins by asking the question: how do we know if something is true or not? Children examine and weigh up various strategies to determine if a statement they have come across can be verified as fact. This has strong links to discussions around “fake news” and internet safety in general. Children will go on to examine some of the mysteries outlined in the text – such as UFOs and Big Foot - and discuss theories and alternative explanations for each, developing their inference and fact retrieval acumen.

Synopsis of Text:

Have you ever wondered what exactly does go bump in the night? From mysteries like Shackleton's ghostly companion to the Loch Ness Monster and friends, read the amazing evidence about these mysterious cases and make up your own mind. Quench your curiosity with this new myth-busting (and sometimes, myth-confirming!) fascinating kids case study book. Things are not always what they seem - until they are, then you might wish you had never asked!
