15 sessions, 3 weeks
This is a three week sequence for The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde in which children will explore the text through a range of immersion and engagement activities and will write a range of texts, including diaries, letters, posters, reports, and their own versions (narratives).
“The Selfish Giant” is of the most famous and didactic fairy tales by Oscar Wilde, called after its main character - a capricious and egoistic giant. This is a parable about the transformative power of love and kindness that brings spring even to the coldest heart.
Christianity, giants, friendship
Please be aware that the Alexis Deacon illustrated edition of the text is abridged and therefore the sequence will need some minor adaptation if using that version.
A Spelling Seed is available for The Selfish Giant.
Overview:
This is a three-session spelling seed for the book The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. Below is the coverage from Appendix 1 of the National Curriculum 2014.
Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement the Literary Curriculum by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning.
Spelling Seeds work alongside the texts within the Literary Curriculum and, as such, will also reflect the suggested number of weeks spent on a text, as well.
